A small announcement with big impact. Karsten added database connection pooling to GNUmed. Not knowing what to expect I tried our online database again at salaam.homeunix.com. Connection is fast. Almost like a lokal database. While there have been noticeable delay when connecting to the online database they are now gone. Nice work.

Eine kleine Ankündigung mit großer Wirkung. Karsten hat GNUmed ein Datenbank connection pooling spendiert. Ich habe es gleich ausprobiert und festgestellt, dass GNUmed deutlich schneller geworden ist. Das zeigt sich besonders stark beim Zugriff auf unsere Online-Datenbank sowie bei Patientenwechsel.

GNUmed goes Alluro

GNUmed goes Alluro. Well not quite. Alluro goes GNUmed. That's right. HILBROS ( www.hilbros.de ) is a business I started that aims at making GNUmed available to collegues in Germany. While Open Source is nice it is no selling bonus. So until that happens GNUmed will have to compete with other vendors in a traditional setting. To protect GNUmed from business issues I will provide it to customers under the name Alluro. Alluro is a name for the platform that will serve as a foundation for a product line.
First products available will be AlluroMed and AlluroPhysio. The Alluro product line is available with full support, updates, documentation and training. GNUmed compatibility is one of the goals but Alluro will adhere to official regulations that might not mix well with FOSS.

GNUmed webbased client

Thanks to some source code I have been sent by Syan I have been able to test
what we have always proclaimed. It is possible to use our business objects
such as gmLog, gmPG2 and so on from a web interface.
Although I cannot comment on how well it works or if it is an ugly hack or not
I can tell it is possible to use a webinterface and a number of rich clients
at the same time.
Since a web client is yet another client to design and maintain I wonder if it
makes any sense to borrow html from other webbased open source emr
applications.
Can anyone comment on where webframeworks such as django or turbogears touch
this subject ?
Setting up the whole thing has been amazingly easy after guessing my way
around.
Just copy the html and gnumed.py into a webspace such
as /srv/www/htdocs/webgnumed
install and activate mod_python
edit httpd.conf to make use of mod_python for the webgnumed directory
symlink gnumed/gnumed/client to webgnumed/handler/GNUmed
run the login.html and be surprised. Nice work Syan.
A use case recently brought up by a collegue is no longer out of scope for GNUmed now. Chronic pain patient rings you up for a refill prescription but you are not at the office. Just use your mobile to bring up GNUmed's webinterface and fill a prescription form. Patient will then go to the office staff and pick it up.

Was wir lange vermutet und geplant haben ist nun erstmal in einer Konzeptstudie einer Prüfung unterzogen worden.
GNUmed kann gleichzeit von mehreren Klienten genutzt werden. Altbekannt ist die simultane Nutzung von mehreren Benutzern und mehreren Betriebssystemen.
Neu ist die Weboberfläche von GNUmed. Ja. GNUmed kann nun auch aus dem Webbrowser genutzt werden. Möglich gemacht hat das Syan. Nach einem Umstieg von Apache tomcat auf mod_python kann unserer middleware ziemlich direkt von der Weboberfläche angesprochen werden.
Natürlich muss diese Oberfläche erst entstehen und das auch nur wenn entsprechender Bedarf besteht. Besonders attraktiv ist der Einsatz auf Mobilgeräten. Smartphones, Tablet-PCs und Co sind nur selten mit einer Tastatur versehen und eher auf das Abrufen von Daten als die Dateneingabe spezialisiert.
Ein Nutzungbeispiel, dass ein Kollege kürzlich in einem Forum anführte kann damit problemlos abgehandelt werden. Der Schmerzpatient, der mich telefonisch erreicht bekommt von mir via Webbrowser auf dem Mobiltelefon ein Rezept gedruckt und kann sich das dann in der Praxis abholen.
Die Installation ressourcenhungriger Applikationen wie RDP-clients, VNC oder gar einem GNUmed-client auf dem Mobilgerät ist damit nicht länger notwendig.

GNUmed MacOSX

Due to fixing some wxMac related issues some people report being able to run the GNUmed client on MacOS X. We have received a screenshot showing GNUmed in a MacOS X decoration.
Version 0.2.4.3 or 0.2.5 will officially support GNUmed on MacOSX so stay tuned.

Die Probleme von wxMac konnten umschifft werden und so wurde uns nun gemeldet, dass GNUmed auf dem Mac läuft. Ein Bildschirmphoto wurde uns zur Ansicht mitgeschickt.

GNUmed - AVISION AV220C2

I got my hands on a new AVISION AV220C2 which is a duplex sheetfed scanner. It's fast and is perfectly supported under MS Windows, GNU/Linux and MacOSX. It supports 9 user configurable scan profiles (image resolution, color, file format, target application) via its scan button.
This actually was motivation to fix the gmScanBackend on Windows which now supports any TWAIN device. I have tested it with a cheap webcam and the new scanner. Nice stuff.
Price tag is around 700 Euro which is not cheap but if you really want go get rid of those old paper documents it's worth your money I guess.
We hope to do some interesting things for GNUmed with it. Watch out for release 0.2.4 for initial support and hopefully 0.2.5 for more advanced stuff.
I would like you to test gmScanBackend with any TWAIN devices you have flying around. Easiest way is to grab version 0.2.4 of the client once it is released, connect to the internet database salaam.homeunix.com, open patient kirk, switch to document import and press the scan button.

GNUmed <--> Turbomed Schnittstelle

Ein Meilenstein in der Geschichte von GNUmed. Die viel gepriesene Möglichkeit GNUmed fernzusteuern ist endlich getestet und in eine nützliche Anwendung überführt. Wir haben ja lange vor Turbomed-Windows Befunde digitalisiert und im GNUmed Archiv abgelegt. Jetzt wurde dieses alte Archiv in das neue GNUmed-Archiv überführt und eine Verbindung zu Turbomed Windows geschaffen.
Wie Turbomed und GNUmed genau zu konfigurieren sind, ist hier genau und reich bebildert beschrieben.
Das GNUmed-Archiv ist damit endlich leicht direkt aus Turbomed Windows heraus nutzbar.
Warum haben wir uns gezielt gegen die Turbomed Bildverarbeitung entschieden ? Nun, wie man sieht, haben wir von DOS zu Windows gewechselt und keine Befunde verloren weil diese in einem separaten aber sehr eng angebunden Programm verwaltet werden. Auch die Patientendaten werden dort verwaltet, ohne dass diese wie bei anderen Programmen separat erfasst werden müssten.
Im Falle eines Wechsels von Turbomed zu einem anderen Hersteller können wir alle digitalen Befunde und Bilder mitnehmen. Die Lösung bringt Unabhängigkeit.
Ein weiterer Punkt ist die Art des Zugriffs. Bei Turbomed muss man neben dem Datenbankzugriff für die Patientendaten Zugriff auf ein Serverlaufwerk haben auf dem die Dateien liegen. Versuchen Sie das mal beim Hausbesuch. Bei GNUmed stecken alle Bilder in der Datenbank. Deshalb reicht es wenn Sie Datenbankzugriff haben. Unabhängig vom Datensicherheitshintergrund können Sie mit dem GNUmed-Archiv folgendes schon heute bewerkstelligen wenn Sie im Urlaub krank werden und dringend Zugriff auf einen alten Arztbrief,ein Röntgenbild oder eine Kopie Ihrer Approbation brauchen.

- USB-Stift mit nem GNUmed-client anstöpseln und GNUmed starten
- in die Praxisdatenbank einloggen

GNUmed in the South African context
There is a blog I came across one day that dealt with the issue of using Ubuntu/Linux in the medical environment of South Africa.
They basically took a look at what is there in terms of software and technology and stumbled over our beloved GNUmed. No hard use case has been defined but it looks like GNUmed is in a state where is actually is able to meet some of their requirements.

GNUmed 'to go'

I came across portableapps.com and knew this would be useful some day. Those MS Windows machines at work never have the right apps installed. Firefox is alway missing as well as OpenOffice. So running those from USB is the way out.
But there is more. Why not run our beloved GNUmed off an USB drive on any Windows box you come across. I hear you saying. What about those dependencies like python and wxpython ? Worry no more. I took care of that.
We now have GNUmed running directly off an USB drive, iPod or whatever.

In der Vergangenheit hab ich ab und an über Anwenungen gelesen, die man direkt von einem USB Stift starten kann. Eine Solche Seite ist portableapps.com . Den Rechnern auf Arbeit fehlen immer die wichtigen Programme wie OpenOffice oder Firefox. Wenn man die also von einem USB Stick starten kann, ist das der Weg.
Aber es gibt noch mehr. Warum sollen wir uns auf die mitgelieferten Anwendungen beschränken ? GNUmed von USB muss Herr. Ich höre schon die Zweifel. Aber keine Sorge. Ich habe mich der Sache angenommen.
Wir können nun GNUmed direkt von USB oder iPod laufen lassen. Es ist direkt bei portable apps integriert.
Jetzt fehlt nur noch eine mobile PostgreSQL Installation ...

GNUmed 0.2.3 release candidate

Eine neue GNUmed-Version steht vor der Tür. Unter MS-Windows und GNU/Linux läuft die neue Version mit einigen neuen Funktionen und vielen Fehlerbereinigungen schon sehr gut. We are nearing a new release of GNUmed. Apart from new features (will be announced in the release notes) a whole lot of bug fixes and code cleanups have made it in. No need for pypgsl any more.
Release candidates are running just fine on GNU/Linux and MS-Windows. MacOSX is still giving us a hard time. But we will figure this out before the release I hope.

Eine neue GNUmed-Version steht vor der Tür. Unter MS-Windows und GNU/Linux läuft die neue Version mit einigen neuen Funktionen und vielen Fehlerbereinigungen schon sehr gut. Sieht so aus als hätte GNUmed eine Funktion zum Anfertigen von Screenshots erhalten. Ist so gar plattformübergreifend und braucht keine Zusatzsoftware.

Zero installation GNUmed virtual machine

To make it even easier for you to try GNUmed we have create a GNUmed virtual machine. If you install the VMware VMplayer it's as easy as getting a bunch of files and starting the virtual machine. Zero installation or configuration on your part. Files are quite large so we don't offer them for download yet. Mail me for details on how to get your GNUmed up and running within minutes.

Einfach den VMplayer von VMware installieren. Damit kann die virtualisierte GNUmed-Installation ohne Installation oder Konfiguration ausgeführt werden. Leider ist die virtuelle Maschine sehr gross und kann daher aktuell nur auf DVD angeboten werden.

GNUmed Live CD
Dank der Arbeit von Claudia Neumann wird es auch dieses Jahr wieder eine Live-CD mit GNUmed geben. Die Firma APW arbeitet hart an der Linuxversion des APW-Programms. Um Anwendern den Einstieg zu erleichtern wird eine Live-CD angeboten, die das Programm präsentiert.
In guter Tradition wird auch GNUmed in der aktuellen Version 0.2 auf der CD erscheinen. Während die Version 0.1 im letzten Jahr eher als Demo daherkam, kann man mit der aktuellen Version richtig arbeiten. Was man alles mit GNUmed realisieren kann, ist aus führlich im Wiki beschrieben.
Als Zeichen einer beginnenden Zusammenarbeit mit APW ist es ab sofort möglich den in APW aktiven Patienten nach GNUmed zu übernehmen und dort damit zu arbeiten. Die dadurch entstehenden Möglichkeiten werden nach und nach ausgeschöpft.

GNUmed auf der EDV-Hausmesse Thüringen
Dank der Initiative von Uwe Trulson und dem Angebot der KV Thüringen bezog ich Samstag, den 07.10.2006 meinen Stand in der KV Weimar. Fast alle anderen Anbieter waren da.
Ausser den Anbietern waren aber kaum Kunden bzw. Interessenten bzw. Ärzte da. Das hat mich doch dann einigermassen gewundert. Schließlich war die Messe ja extra für die zukünftigen niedergelassenen Kollegen.
Uwe und ich haben dann noch ne Weile GNUmed besprochen und Verbindungen aufgebaut. So langsam entsteht ein Netzwerk um GNUmed. Alles noch nicht spruchreif aber es ging um Zertifizierung, Finanzierung, Kooperationen und Marketing. Daneben um Bestrebungen GNUmed für freie Anästhesisten nutzbar zu machen. GNUmed liess sich auf seinem Windows-Notebook zumindest problemlos installieren und starten.
Karsten hat mir berichtet, dass GNUmed in einer Physiotherapiepraxis evaluiert wird. Schauen wir mal wo das hinführt.
Auch dieses Jahr wird es dank APW wieder eine Live-CD geben, die GNUmed und APW Linux in der aktuellen Version enthält. Dieses Jahr sollen die Programme sogar miteinander kommunizieren können. Und wem es gefällt, der installiert von der CD gleich auf eine Festplatte.

GNUmed runs on posgresql 8.1

Soweit ich weiss ist PostgreSQL 7.4.x die von den Entwicklern unterstützte Version. Ich habs dennoch mit PostgreSQL 8.1 versucht und bisher funktioniert es problemlos.

as far as I know PostgreSQL 7.4.x ist the supported version for GNUmed. Nevertheless version 8.1.4 seems to work fine. bootstrap process works fine and GNUmed is running as well.

GNUmed archive bug fixed

Karsten und ich habe nach einer umfangreichen Fehlersuche das Problem des GNUmed Archivs unter MS Windows beheben können. Sieht so aus als liefe das GNUmed Archiv jetzt problemlos auf GNU/Linux und MS/Windows. Ein bekannter von mir hat Zugriff auf einen halbwegs aktuellen Mac sodass wir hoffentlich bald GNUmed auf dieser Platform anbieten können.

Looks like Karsten has successfully tracked down and killed the bug that prevented the GNUmed archive from working properly on MS Windows. Looks like MS Windows and GNU/Linux are good to go.
A friend of our has access to a fairly recent Apple Mac box. A friend has donated a Mac box running Mac OS 9. Hopefully we will have GNUmed running on Mac OS 9/10 soon.

Cherry driver out in the wild

Martin Preuss hat eine neue Version des GNU/Linuxtreiber für die Chipkartentastaturen von Cherry herausgebracht.
Von mir initiiert und von Cherry gefördert (Hardware) kann damit ohne kernel-patches auf die Tastaturen zugegriffen werden.
Bisher hatte ich noch keine Zeit den Einsatz auf Thin Clients zu testen aber Martin stellt sicher, dass das immer einfacher wird.
Seine Bibliothek libchipcard ist auch eben als Beta in der Version 3 erschienen und legt den Grundstein für den Einsatz unter MS Windows. Das ist enorm wichtig für GNUmed.
