GNUmed 0.2.7.2 is around the corner. Some bugs have been fixed.

Feedback from Mandriva users. Apparently the openSUSE spec file has been used to build Mandriva packages.

openSUSE packages for 10.2 and 10.3 are available through a repository and OneClick installation
If you are running OpenSUSE 10.3 click this link to install gnumed-client . To add the repository through yast see here .
For zypper on the command line run as root:

Ubuntu Gutsy has been updated with a patched package that solves the psycopg2 related problem.
Just add: deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-proposed universe to your /etc/apt/sources.lst

There is one bug left for Windows and PostgreSQL 8.2 but this will be fixed for 0.2.7.2.

More exciting developement has occured in CVS head. A backend listener has been implemented. For details see here.

We are currently looking into ways to get input from devices such as Biotronik Cardiomessenger or SMS from mobile phones into GNUmed. Stay tuned for more details.

GNUmed client RPM available

I have finally gotten around to learn to produce rpm packages. In theory it is
really easy. The hard part is to get the install part right. While the rpms
are by no means perfect they should do the job for openSUSE 10.3 . I guess
with few modifications they should work on Mandriva and Fedora as well.

I am posting early revisions at the usual download space for all to try.
I am planning on using Novell's buildservice later on.

It is advisable to place a config file at /home/foouser/.gnumed/gnumed.conf

Ich habe mich mal hingesetzt und in kanpp 24h das 1x1 des Paketerstellens gelernt. Ich benutzte openSUSE 10.3 und das arbeitet mit RPM-Paketen. Diese werden auch von Mandriva und Fedora verwendet. Nach unzähligen Versuchen und Anpassungen des Rezeptes (spec-Datei) kamen dann drei Pakete für GNUmed 0.2.7.1 heraus.

GNUmed live CD cooking

Thanks to the Debian Live project I have been able to produce a set of live images. The first version is a bootable CD based on a stable Debian version . Right now I have just added the GNUmed client. The new issue here is less a bootable CD but rather the possibility to produce an up-to-date CD as soon as a new version of GNUmed is released. I have decided to go with KDE for now but this might change to XFCE or GNOME if there is demand.

I have yet to extend this CD with a PostgreSQL server and a GNUmed database. There is no customized artwork yet but this will change with future versions.

Version 0.2.7.1 is around the corner as a few nasty bugs have been discovered by our users and subsequently been debugged and fixed.

Dank Debian Live ist es nun endlich möglich regelmässig mit Erscheinen einer neuen GNUmed-Version eine aktuelle Live-CD anzubieten. Vorbei sind die Zeiten in denen aufwändig KNOPPIX CDs angepasst werden mussten. Fast auf Knopfdruck kommt jetzt einer aktualisierte Version daher.

Ich bin mir noch nicht sicher ob XFCE, KDE oder GNOME das Rennen machen wird. Hängt massgeblich von den Nutzerwünschen ab.

GNUmed 0.2.7.1 steht vor der Fertigstellung und behebt eine Reihe von Schönheitsfehlern unter Windows und GNU/Linux.

GNUmed server unter Debian GNU/Linux

A few people have asked for instructions to install a GNUmed server part, namely database. Well, some time ago Karsten introduced the script 'dh-install_gnumed_server.sh' This so rocks. Just download the script, become root and run it. It will install all the packages needed and produce a current database. Do not run this script if you have a working database already as it will destroy it (after asking you to confirm). Use the upgade-db script like this instead: upgrade-db.sh 6 7.

I have used this today to set up a database on a Debian server and an Ubuntu Feisty vmplayer image without problems.

Einige Leute haben um Instruktionen zur Installation des Serverteils von GNUmed ersucht. Da fiel mir ein, dass Karsten vor einigen Wochen das Skript 'dh-install_gnumed_server.sh' bereitgestellt hat. Einfach das Skript herunterladen und installieren. Dadurch werden automatisch alle notwendigen Voraussetzungen erfüllt und eine aktuelle GNUmed-Datenbank erzeugt. Aber Vorsicht. Das Skript sollte nicht verwendet werden wenn bereits eine funktionsfähige Datenbank existiert ! Für diesen Fall sollte das Skript upgade-db wie folgt verwendet werden : upgade-db.sh 6 7.

Ich habe das auf zwei Rechnern mit Debian und Ubuntu Feisty ausprobiert und es funktioniert sehr gut.

GNUmed update - no problem

This weekend I have finally gotten around to update our production server using GNUmed as a document archive for the propietory software Turbomed. All I had to do was run the provided update script. This took care of a backup and started the update process. The backup which included compressing it with bzip took about 5 hours for a 5 Gigabyte database containing roughly 1500 patients and up to 20 documents per patient.

The client has been installed on the Windows hosts and runs without problems.

An diesem Wochenende habe ich es endlich geschafft GNUmed 0.2.7.0 auf unserem Produktionsserver zu installieren. Wir nutzen GNUmed als Dokumentenarchiv zusammen mit Turbomed. Das Update lief absolut problemlos. Es dauerte ca 5 Stunden. Grund war, dass automatisch vor dem updaten ein komprimiertes Backup der Datenbank erzeugt wird. Es wurde eine Datenbank von ca . 5 Gigabyte und mit etwa 1500 Patienten erneuert. Manche Patienten haben bis zu 20 Dokumente zugeordnet bekommen.


Auch die Installation der clients lief auf den Windowsrechnern problemlos.

GNUmed 0.2.7.0 - for Windows

The Windows installer for GNUmed 0.2.7 is out. There is an installer for the client and for the server part. Please backup your GNUmed configuration files before installing the new version. This is the gnumed.conf file as well as various gm_ctl_conf. Both of them will be overwritten so be careful. Please do not simply restore the config files as the content has changed. Take a look and merge your changes such as additional server profiles or sources of external patient files in gnumed.conf as well as special start commands in gm_ctl_client.conf. In most cases no changes will be neccessary.

I realize that this part should be handled by the installer in future
versions and I will do so hopefully before the next release.

The server part is up to date as well. Some last minute bugs were fixed in the bootstrap script. Please report any problems to gnumed-devel@gnu.org or the bug tracker at savannah.

Bitte erstellen Sie vor der Installation ein Backup des GNUmed-Verzeichnisses und insbesondere der Dateien gnumed.conf und gm_ctl_client.conf. Diese werden überschrieben. Grund ist, dass sich der Inhalt massgeblich geändert hat. Bitte schauen Sie ob Änderungen in den Dateien vorgenommen wurden (neue Profile, externe Quellen zu Patientendateien) und übertragen Sie diese in die neuen Dateien.

Dieser Teil sollte in der Zukunft vom Installationsprogramm erledigt werden und wird mit stabiler werdendem GNUmed nicht mehr notwendig sein.

GNUmed on the Mac - again

Jim Busser has managed to make GNUmed run in Mac OSX Tiger again. He managed to pull up a few relevant threads off the net that helps on letting MacOS find the correct python. After that it's pretty much a piece of cake. Information on how to get it working has been added to our Wiki

GNUmed - user first reports bugs then success

GNUmed is free as in freedom but many users think it comes at a price. The price tag shows the resources you put in to make it run on your systems.

A long time ago I decided to make the installation process easier. This involved producing an installer for MS Windows. Few users have reported on their experience but it seems GNUmed benefits from its packaged versions. This holds true for Debian , Ubuntu and MS Windows.

Just a few days ago a German doctor reported a problem with GNUmed 0.2.6.3. One E-Mail and a fix later he has been successful in bootstrapping a GNUmed database and running the client against it. Congrats. Way to go. While we don't know about his computer skills he is a doctor by profession and not a fulltime IT-guy.

He asked about the scanner connectivity and framegrabber options and has since reported success.

But what's worth even more is the bug he triggered and reported which makes us release version 0.2.6.4 in a few days which holds a number of fixes.

He even supplied us with valuable information on how to connect the German legacy app 'DocConcept' to GNUmed through our great XML-RPC interface. As of now we have four (4) legacy apps in our Wiki which can interact with GNUmed without a single code change.

Well thanks to our testers. For him updating to future versions will be a piece of cake.

Dank eines Kollegen wissen wir nun von einer weiteren erfolgreichen GNUmed Installation. Nach zwei E-Mails und einem Fehlerreport durch den Kollegen konnte auf seinem Windowssystem eine GNUmed-Datenbank erzeugt werden und auch ein Client damit verbinden.

Ich nenne das Erfolg. So schwer kann die Installation nicht sein. Obwohl ich vermute, dass der Kollegen überdurchschnittliche PC-Kenntnisse hat.

Nun nachdem durch ihn ein Fehler entdeckt und gemeldet wurde wird demnächst die Version 0.2.6.4 als Zwischversion vor der 0.2.7 veröffentlicht.

Beigesteuert hat er auch seine Erfahrungen bei der Anbindung von 'DocConcept' an GNUmed. Wir haben jetzt also 4 Praxisprogramme , die über die Schnittstelle mit GNUmed interagieren können.

Und jetzt sind für den Kollegen Updates nur einen Mausklick entfernt denn den vermeintlich schwierigen Teil der Installation hat er ja bereits gemeistert.

GNUmed and OpenClinica

OpenClinca is a enterprise grade clinical study management solution. It runs on the Apache tomcat webserver version 5.5. OpenSuse 10.2 provides all packages once you add JAVA:addon/openSUSE_10.2 to the channel list for smart. Install tomcat5.5. Dependencies will be pulled automatically. In my setting a lot of symlinks were not created so follow the Openclinics install instructions for the basics. Once done make sure you have the following setup (took me hours)

start with 'rctomcat55 start' and watch /var/log/tomcat55/catalina.out for messages.

go to http://localhost:8080 in a webbrowser and test the jsp and servlet examples. If that works fine go to http://localhost:8080/OpenClinica and you will be greeted by the login screen

With respect to GNUmed one can think of a feature to submit patients to studies in OpenClinica or import follow-up visits as encounters in GNUmed.

GNUmed OpenOffice.org support

GNUmed 0.2.7 is about to be released and it brings an exciting new feature. Since OpenOffice.org comes with a python api that allows us to control it Karsten expanded the work of a kind person on the mailing list and developed a GNUmed letter writer. Based on OpenOffice templates that are stored in the GNUmed database documents like referral letters are filled with patient data like SOAP, lab results and more.

But there is more. Since a document in OpenOffice can have a background image we are thinking about using it for printing forms such as prescriptions here in Germany.

On document completion a copy of the final document is imported into the GNUmed archive.

One needs to have recent OpenOffice.org along with the pyuno extension installed. For Debian Linux it seems to work out of the box. On Opensuse Linux one needs to add the Openoffice directory to the $PYTHONPATH variable.

MS Windows and MacOSX deliver OpenOffice and pyuno as well so I don't forsee any problems.

GNUmed 0.2.7 steht vor der Fertigstellung und bringt einige aufregende Programmfunktionen mit. GNUmed hat eine OpenOffice-Schnittstelle bekommen. Die OpenOffice API für Python erlaubt es OO mittels Python zu steuern. GNUmed nutzt das für die Briefschreibung. Karteieinträge und z.B. Laborwerte können so in Briefe übergeben werden. Erzeugt werden die Briefe aus Vorlagen, die in der GNUmed-Datenbank gespeichert sind und so unabhängig von der OpenOffice Installation zur Verfügung stehen.

OO kann aber auch Hintergrundbilder im Dokument einbinden und so wird GNUmed für den Formulardruck eingesetzt werden. Rezepte kommen da in den Sinn.
Nach Fertigstellung des Dokuments wird eine Kopie ins GNUmed-Archiv importiert.

Bei Debian scheint alles ohne Konfiguration zu funktionieren. Bei Opensuse muss der Pfad zu OpenOffice der Variable $PYTHONPATH hinzugefügt werden. Damit können wir ausdrucken, pdf exportieren und sogar per email verschicken.

GNUmed <--> Turbomed Verbindung

Die neue Version ist das Resultat eifriger Rückmeldungen eines Anwenders. Mit dessen Hilfe konnten einige sehr selten auftretende Probleme isoliert und behoben werden. Neue Funktionen sind nicht nennenswert dazugekommen.

Die Windowsversion hat in Sachen Stabilität, Installation und Benutzerfreundlichkeit einige Fortschritte gemacht. Die Anzahl der DOS-Fenster wurde auf Null reduziert. Das Programm erkennt jetzt schon bei der Installation die Sprache und passt sich entpsrechend an. Selbst Fehlermeldungen sind deutlich nutzer- und programmiererfreundlicher geworden.

Die Nutzung in Zusammenhang mit externen Praxisprogrammen ist viel besser geworden. Eine enge Integration existiert für Turbomed. Der sogenannte 'slave mode' hat sich im täglichen Einsatz als stabil erwiesen.

The new version sports few new features but rather quite a few changes under the hood. Software errors are handled much better in a way that they can be easily reported to the developers.

The so called slave mode has proven to be stable on MS Windows and is in use now daily. It is used to connect a legacy app called Turbomed. That way a document archive has been established. Along with a fast image scanner it has proven to be efficient enough for use during patient consultations.

The MS Windows version has seen some love. The DOS Windows have been removed. Looks cleaner. Apart from that the installer is now even smarter and detects the user interface language.

Another GNUmed installation at doctor's office

We just completed a realworld GNUmed installation at a German doctor's office. He works with a commecial EMR but was in need of a good document archive solution that would actually interact closely with the commercial system.

GNUmed 0.2.6.3 has been installed along with the interface to legacy systems. When ever the doctor wants to add new paper documents to the electronic archive he simply opens that patient in his commercial emr and lets the commercial app call GNUmed. GNUmed detecs the call and opens the current patient. It then automagically switches to the plugin for document input. Along with the sheetfed duplex image scanner the doctor uses archival only takes a few seconds. That includes the input of metadata such as document type, date of creation and so on.

Viewing is just as easy. Just open the patient in the legacy system and have it call GNUmed. GNUmed will detect the call and open the viewer plugin.

The MD had used another standalone document archive for a few years which now had about 10000 records along with metadata. This data existed as a sql database and has been easily transferred in the GNUmed database.

GNUmed ist ab sofort in einer weiteren Praxis im Einsatz. Ein Kollege hat seit Jahren eine alleinstehende Lösung in Betrieb und hat da drin ca. 10000 Papierbefunde digitalisiert abgelegt.

In der Praxis wurde GNUmed zusammen mit der Schnittstelle zu Fremdsystemen installiert. In dem speziellen Fall ist bereits Turbomed im Einsatz und so musste GNUmed daran angebunden werden. Das funktioniert bestens. Wenn in Turbomed ein Patient aufgerufen wird kann GNUmed damit angesprochen werden. In GNUmed wird automatisch der gewünschte Patient geladen und die gewünschte Aktion azsgeführt. So kann automatisch das Plugin zur Neuerfassung von Papierbefunden in den Vordergrund gebracht werden. Ebenso kann von Turbomed aus das Plugin zum Einsehen bereits erfasster Befunde geladen werden.

Alles zusammen dauert durch den Einsatz eines Einzugsscanners nur wenige Sekunden und kann nebenbei , z.B. beim Umziehen des Patienten erfolgen.

Die Daten auis dem alten System wurden ohne Informationsverlust ins GNUmed überführt.

HILBROS, die Entwickler der Vorlage für das NSIS Installationspaket haben den Quelltext der GNUmed Gemeinschaft zur Verfügung gestellt.
Das ist ein wichtiger Beitrag, da damit aus einem CVS snapshot Installationspakete für MS Windows erstellt werden können. Die Vorlage für den Client ist bereits im CVS und die für den Server folgt bald.

LinuxTag Berlin 2007

Karsten und ich waren auf dem LinuxTag Berlin und haben GNUmed vorgestellt. Anwesend waren die üblichen Verdächtigen. Der Vortrag wurde von der überschauhbaren Zahl der Besucher gut angenommen.

Wir kündigen hiermit stolz die Verfügbarkeit von GNUmed in einer neuen Version an. GNUmed ist für den GNU/Linux , MS-Windows - und Mac OS X (PPC, i386) zu haben. Dank an die fleissigen Programmierer von python, wxpython, PostgreSQL.

GNUmed kommt mit einigen Verbesserungen unter der Haube und natürlich neuen Funktionen. Welche das genau sind kann unter http://wiki.gnumed.de/bin/view/Gnumed/GnumedTodo#AnchorDone nachgelesen werden.

We are proud to announce the availability of GNUmed 0.2.6.1 for GNU/Linux, MS Windows and MacOS X.

The hooks framework has been extended. The bootstrapper transfers users and runs sanity checks for plausibility after upgrade. Encounter handling now allows a user to start a new encounter on demand. Simple data mining has been added. GNUmed now runs on Mac OS X and supports OsiriX DICOM viewer. Patient picture handling has been properly implemented. Debugging has been
improved for better user feedback. The backend features an improved backup script and a new
restore script, and now requires PG 8.1. A bug in the phrasewheel has been fixed.

GNUmed crossbootstrapping

While working on the Mac I thought now that the client works for me what about

the server and postgresql ?



I always tell everyone we are so cross platform. And you bet we are.



I grabbed the postgresql installer from http://www.postgresqlformac.com/ and

installed it. It actually gives you a nice set of graphical client tools to

start/stop the server.



Because I didn't know where the installer put the files and the bootstrapper

for the mac was not yet quite ready I used cross bootstrapping.



Linux came to my rescue. I simply changed the destination IP address for the

Mac in the bootstrap conf files and started bootstrap-latest.sh



It complained that the mac doesn't let me connect so I had to change the

pg_hba.conf in /Library/PostgreSQL8/data/ to accept incoming connections from

my trusty linux.



Automagically a database v6 was created on the Mac and I was actually able to

use that one.



Now beat that. We are now officially cross platform in every sense of the

word. Cross bootstrapping rocks.



If you take that idea one step further this means we can actually *remote

update*. No need for the user to pull the update files. We can simply update

*their* database from *our* computers.



Now that gives remote control a new perspective in terms of support.

Nachdem GNUmed als Client auf dem Mac läuft dachte ich mir ich müsste auch den Server und damit postgresql installieren. Nach einiger Suche nach einem einfach zu installierenden Paket bin ich auf http://www.postgresqlformac.com/ gestossen. Die bieten ein einfach zu installierendes Paket an, das gleich einige kleine Programme zu verwalten des Servers mitbringt.



Das die bootstrap Routine auf dem Mac nocht nicht völlig fertig ist habe ich mir überlegt von Linux aus eine Datenbank aufzusetzen. Das war einfacher als gedacht. Ich musste nur die IP des Zielrechners in den bootstrap Konfigurationsdateien ändern.



Allerdings liess der Mac initial keine Verbindung von aussen zu, sodass ich erst in /Library/PostgreSQL8/data/ die pg_hba.conf anpassen musste. Dann ging alles reibungslos.



Auf meinem Linuxnotebook startete ich 'bootstrap-latest.sh' und einige Minuten später war auf dem Mac eine Datenbank v6 installiert, die von GNUmed problemlos verwendet werden konnte.



Das erschliesst neue Möglichkeiten bei der Fernwartung und Updates. Man kann also von zentraler Stelle die Datenbanken der Kunden auf den neuesten Stand bringen.



Wie cool ist das ? Nun kann ich offiziell behaupten GNUmed client/server läuft in beliebigen Kombinationen aus GNU/Linux, MacOSX und MS Windows.
